Yong-Jin Gu Wins PBA Scorpion Championship

South Korean Yong-Jin Gu rolled through the TV finals to win the PBA Scorpion Championship. Gu had to climb the ladder to earn the title. The first match had Yong-Jin Gu bowling against Canadian Dan MacLelland, who was an All-American and USBC Collegiate Bowler of the Year at Saginaw Valley State University. Gu won the match, 245-204, and went on to bowl against another SVSU standout, Bill O’Neill. Gu also beat O’Neill, 256-208, to move on to the semifinals against Australian Jason Belmonte. Yong-Jin Gu beat Belmonte, 233-208, and went to the finals against fellow South Korean, Jun-Yung Kim. Gu continued to bowl well, as he had done all day, and beat Kim, 236-224.

This is Yong-Jin Gu’s first PBA title. He had not bowled any PBA events prior to the PBA World Series of Bowling this year.

Smith, Neral Win PBA Regional Events

Two PBA Regional events took place this weekend.  The PBA Northwest/West Regions Caveman Bowl Open took place at Caveman Bowl in Grant’s Pass, Oregon and the PBA South Region Midlothian, Va Non-Champion Open took place at King Pin Lanes in Midlothian, Virginia.

Don Allen III led qualifying of the Northwest/West region event with a score of 1888 (+288, 236 Average).  Allen was not able to hang on to his lead, finishing with a 6-6 record to drop him to third place for the tournament.  Bryon Smith finished match play with a 10-2 record to move into first with a total score of 4475 (+475).  Dave Arnold finished the tournament in second and Bob Rosenau finished in fourth.  This event was bowled on the 39′ Dick Weber Open pattern.

John Neral led qualifying of the PBA South region event this weekend with a score of 1780 (+180, 222.5 Average).  John cruised through match play, losing only one game in the round of 8.  John was undefeated otherwise, going on to win the tournament.  Chris Hans made it to the final match before losing to John Neral, becoming the runner up.  Chris Arcaro and Jason Fitzgerald were the other two semifinalists, finishing third and fourth.  This event was bowled on the PBA Scorpion pattern.

Morgan, Futrell, Jaros, Baker Win PBA Regional Tournaments

Nick Morgan won the PBA West Region Palo Alto Lanes Open with a score of 4381 (+381, 219 Average) and a 5-2 record.  Morgan defeated #1 qualifier Scott Norton, Steven Villanueva and Jeff Frankos on his way to winning the open.  The PBA West Region Palo Alto Lanes Open was bowled on the PBA Cheetah pattern.  See the full results at PBA.com

Jay Futrell won the PBA Midwest/Southwest Region Barney’s Open with a score of 4888 (+488, 222 Average) and a 7-2 record.   Futrell defeated Marc Heninger and John Kay to win the tournament.  J.R. Raymond qualified and won 2 matches to finish 4th.  Derek Sapp qualified 1st with a score of 2885 (+285, 221 Average), but lost in the first round of matchplay.  The PBA Midwest/Southwest Region Barney’s Open was bowled on the PBA World Championship pattern.  See the full results at PBA.com

Steve Jaros won the PBA Central Region Boss Plows/Mid States Truck Open with a score of 4582 (+582, 229 Average) and a matchplay record of 9-3.  Jeff Zaffino (4592) finished 2nd and Ken Abner (4553) finished 3rd.  Saginaw’s Dan MacLelland bowled will and finished 5th in the tournament.  The PBA Central Region Boss Plows/Mid States Truck Open was bowled on the PBA Scorpion pattern.  See the full results at PBA.com

Tom Baker won the PBA South Region Camp LeJeune Open with a score of 4761 (+761, 238 Average) and a matchplay record of 9-3.  Jason Mahr (4771) finished 2nd and Shawn McKee (4694) finished 3rd.  The PBA South Region Camp LeJeune Open was bowled on the PBA Viper pattern.  See the full results at PBA.com

Warren, Boresch, Banks, Mitchell Win Regionals Over Weekend

Chris Warren won the PBA Northwest Region Eastmont Lanes Open with a 10-2 record and a score of 4243 (212.15 Average). High Qualifier Jason Williams finished 2nd with a 6-6 record despite his leading score of 4280 (214 Average). The PBA Northwest Region Eastmont Lanes Open was bowled on the PBA Scorpion pattern.

Lennie Boresch, Jr. won the PBA Midwest/Central Region Sparetime Lanes Open. Boresch qualified 6th and averaged 239.55 for the tournament. He defeated high qualifier David Traber (252.9 Average) in the finals, 267-237, to win the tournament. The PBA Midwest/Central Region Sparetime Lanes Open was bowled on the PBA Viper pattern.

Timothy Banks won the PBA South Region Spartanburg, SC Open. Banks (211.05 Average) defeated Tom Baker (211.18 Average) in the finals, 195-194, to win the tournament. The PBA South Region Spartanburg, SC Open was bowled on the PBA Chameleon pattern.

Kevin Mitchell won the PBA Southwest Region Greenville Open. Mitchell (212.14 Average) defeated Brett Cooper (204.09 Average) in the finals, 233-223, to win the tournament. The PBA Southwest Region Greenville Open was bowled on the PBA Chameleon pattern.

Traber, Yokobosky, Shewmake, Norton Win Regionals Over Weekend

David Traber won the PBA Central Region Suburban Lanes Open this weekend. He defeated high qualifier Jeffrey Roche, Eugene McCune and Brian Kretzer in that order to win the tournament. Traber had an average of 235.07 and a perfect 7-0 record on his way to the championship. Traber was formerly an exempt player, who won his exemption in the 2004 PBA Tour Trials. He has 4 career PBA Tour titles.

Ken Yokobosky won the PBA East Region Leisure Lanes Open. Yokobosky defeated high qualifier Sam Maccarone and Michael Fagan on his way to the championship. Yokobosky posted a 202.24 average and a 7-2 record to win the tournament. Yokobosky is a USBC Gold Coach and Team USA Assistant Coach.

Randy Shewmake won the PBA Southwest Region Young & Pratt Austin Open. Shewmake was the high qualifier with a 227.23 Average and a record of 7-2 for the tournament. He defeated Ryan Boroff and Chris Hibbitts II to win the title.

Scott Norton won the PBA West Silver Nugget Turbo 2-1 Open this weekend. Norton, posted a 229.67 average and a 12-4 record for the tournament. Mike DeVaney and Noel Vazquez were the runners-up for the tournament. Norton was named College Bowler of the Year while bowling at Cal State-Fullerton in 2001.

The Suburban Lanes Open and the Young & Pratt Austin Open were both bowled on the PBA Cheetah pattern. The Leisure Lanes Open was bowled on the PBA Shark pattern. The Silver Nugget Turbo 2-1 Open was bowled on the PBA Scorpion pattern.

Bohr, Laughlin, Moore Win PBA Regional Tournaments this weekend.

Team USA member Nathan Bohr won the PBA Southwest Region Killeen Open with a 7-2 record and an average of 227. Bohr led qualifying and defeated Cole Copeland and Joe Findling in the semifinals and finals. The Killeen Open was bowled on the PBA Scorpion pattern.

Mike Moore won the PBA South Region Summerville, SC Open with a 5-1 record and a 200 average. Tom Baker led qualifying, but lost shortly after to Tom Daugherty. Moore qualified 6th and defeated Ken Simard and Brian Osteen in the semifinals and finals. The Summerville Open was bowled on the PBA Scorpion pattern.

Ben Laughlin won the PBA West /Northwest Regions Don Johnson Memorial Classic with a 7-3 record and an average of 215. Leading qualifier Aaron Pawloski lost in his round of 16 match to Curtis Woods Jr. Laughlin defeated Jeff Frankos and Chris Warren in his last two matches to win the title. The Don Johnson Memorial Classic was bowled on the PBA Earl Anthony pattern.

Mike DeVaney Wins Scorpion Championship

In the finals, Mike DeVaney defeated Jason Belmonte, 189-170, to win the PBA Scorpion Championship. On the way to the finals, DeVaney beat Sean Rash, 182-162. Belmonte defeated Tom Smallwood, 222-175.

This is DeVaney’s first PBA title of the season and second of his career.

PBA Scorpion Championship Update

The TV finals field is set for the PBA Scorpion Championship. For the men, the four finalists are Tom Smallwood, Mike DeVaney, Jason Belmonte, and Sean Rash. For the women, the two finalists are Liz Johnson and Shannon Pluhowsky.

This tournament is Smallwood’s first TV finals appearance, coming after winning his exemption in the tour trials back in May.

PBA Scorpion Championship Qualifying Round 1

Chris Barnes is leading the Men’s PBA Scorpion Championship after the first round of qualifying with a score of 1650 (+250, 235.71 Average).

Liz Johnson is leading women’s tour qualifying with a score of 1573 (+173, 224.71 Average).

Round 2 of qualifying concludes this evening around 7:00, when the men will cut to the top 28 and the women will cut to the top 8. Matchplay will begin tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 10:00. The Scorpion Championship is part of the PBA World Series of Bowling, taking place in Detroit, Michigan.

PBA Scorpion Championship TQR Results

Leading the men in the PBA Scorpion Championship TQR was Lee Vanderhoef with a score of 1537 (+137, 219.57 Average). Sun Hee Lee led the women with a score of 1384 (-16, 197.71 Average).

13 men and 4 women advance to bowl in the PBA Scorpion Championship, which starts on Monday, August 24th.
